Victoria’s First InsulLiving Home Nears Completion
The Independent Builders Network is paving the way for leaner, greener, better built homes in Victoria by constructing the state’s first eight-star energy rated Bondor InsulLiving™ display home.
Under construction at 26 Springridge Boulevard, Wallan, the stylish three-level residence is one of two InsulLiving™ display homes in Australia, with the other in Wilton, New South Wales, now open to the public.
Built by IBN builder Marcel Mott of Whittlesea’s DTC Family Builders, together with other local builders from the Independent Builders Network, the three-bedroom Wallan house showcases Bondor’s revolutionary InsulWall® and SolarSpan® thermal building products, designed to deliver interiors that are warmer in winter, cooler in summer.
Already the Wallan house, which has an as-designed energy rating of 8.2 stars, is attracting plenty of attention from both the public and the building community, with scores having witnessed its early stages of construction.
“We’ve had lots of people here on site – potential clients from Kinglake, St Albans, even as far away as Warrnambool, who want to know more about the system and the benefits of insulated panel,” Mr Mott said.
Bondor General Manager Geoff Marsdon said the InsulLiving™ system was proving successful across Australia and had significant potential for the Victorian residential building sector, for architects and builders through to home owners.
“Marcel and the DTC team are constructing a beautiful house that demonstrates the versatility and stylish good looks of insulated panel,” he said.
“This display home will allow members of the public to appreciate the quality and finish firsthand, not to mention the incredible insulation benefits.
“The thermal technology used ensures the house stays warm in winter, a major advantage in the southern states, and cool in summer, with the result being less reliance on heaters and air-conditioning.”
Bondor’s prototype InsulLiving™ house, built in Burpengary, Queensland, in 2011 has been twice featured on TV’s Today Tonight for its quick build time and superior insulation benefits.
The house earned an as-designed energy rating of eight stars and, following a year-long independent study by the Queensland University of Technology into its energy consumption, achieved an incredible ‘real life’ energy rating of 9.5 stars.
The family of four who road-tested the Burpengary house spent an average of just 44 cents a day on heating and cooling.
An experienced residential and commercial builder, Mr Mott’s resume includes the design and construction of Whittlesea’s ambulance station, construction of the Whittlesea IGA, as well as several factories, childcare centres and many private homes in the local area.
“I believe in the InsulLiving™ product and was keen to try something different that offered a faster build time, reduced construction costs, less waste because no timber, brick or plaster is used, and improved energy efficiency for the life of the home,” Mr Mott said.
“The InsulLiving™ system is leading the way in construction, innovation and technology in residential housing in Australia.”
Mr Mott also said his experience with Bondor had been “fantastic” from a builder’s point of view.
“They have been generous with their product knowledge, support, tools and training – even going so far as to fly me and members of my team to Queensland for training.”
Built on a sloping 612sqm site, the Wallan display home will feature three bedrooms with an optional fourth bedroom/rumpus room, extra-large garage, chef-style kitchen with butler’s pantry and stunning top-floor library with a void overlooking the lower levels, all spread over a spacious 322.86sqm.
The home is expected to be completed in the coming months and, in the meantime, regular photographs of the build are being posted on the DTC Family Builders website, www.dtcbuilders.com.au.
